Coban Rondo and Coban Pelangi

Coban Rondo and Coban Pelangi
(The waterfall of the widow and the Rainbow waterfall)
In the mountains of Java Timur, a tale goes like this:

There was a beautiful woman named Dewi Anjarwati who got married to a handsome man. The couple decided to go on a journey in order to visit beautiful places. When they reached this charming waterfall in the hills of Batu – the apple cart of east java, they met a man who was wandering in the jungles. The wanderer set his eyes on the beautiful woman and wanted to take her away by force. The husband asked her to hide in thick jungles and not to come out of hiding until he had dealt with the intruder. She did likewise and a bloody fight ensued between the two men. The legend has it that both the fighters killed each other but the woman remains hiding because her husband has not called her out of the hiding. Meanwhile people named the waterfall after her – Coban Rondo (the waterfall of the widow. Rondo means widow in Indonesian / Javanese). They believe she is still hiding there somewhere around the waterfall.

Coban Rondo (pronounced in Javanese as ‘Choban Rondo’) is a waterfall in Batu about 30 Km west of the city of Malang. The water falls from a height of about 60 meters making a misty atmosphere around it.

To reach Coban Rando take a minibus from Landunganding Sari  bus station in Malang and get down at Patung sapi – the Cow’s Statue in village Pujon Sepaluh. From the Cow’s Statue take motorbike taxi (Ojek) to cover the 5 Km stretch to the waterfall through a picturesque jungle where coffee plantations can be seen along the road. On the way back I walked the 5 Km stretch along with a fellow enthusiastic tourist.

The Labyrinth
This is a funny labyrinth made of a hedge. On the way back from the waterfall enjoy walking through it. First, reach the centre of the maze and then find a way out. Interesting and refreshing.

The Labyrinth

Coban Pelangi:
This waterfall is situated in beautiful lush green hills of village GubukKlakah, 30 Km east of Malang where water falls from a height of 30 metres. You have to walk about 1.5 Km of mild to steep slope to enjoy the sight. The track is quite picturesque, quite, and tranquil. We covered this spot while on our way back from mount Bromo.

When the Sun is at its proper position rainbow effect is visible here at the rising mist.
The waterfall is also termed as ‘rainbow’ waterfall. Since the fall gives rise lots of mist there appears a rainbow when the Sun is appropriately positioned to create the rainbow effect. That’s at around 10 a m – 11 a m. Unfortunately, my visit didn’t coincide with the right time to see the rainbow effect.
