Dawki – the
river with crystal clear water
Meghalaya
boasts of the cleanest village in Asia – Mawlynnong, but it doesn’t stop just
there. River Dawki which passes by Mawlynnong is Asia’s cleanest river
with crystal clear water in Meghalaya. The river flows between the hills of
Khasi and Jaintia districts and after a distance of 80 Km leaves the hilly part
of Indian terrain to enter the plains of Bangladesh to become river Goyain.
River Dawki
(Dauki or Wah Umngot) has so clear green water that the boats on it actually
appear floating in the air. It is spectacular to see the clarity and
mesmerizing appearance of the boats on the water.
There’s a
suspension bridge of the British era over the river and just about one
kilometre from this river crossing there’s a land border crossing between India
and Bangladesh. The place is Dawki – Tamabil . Tamabil falls in the Sylhet
division of Bangladesh.
The
Dawki-Tamabil crossing is the biggest trade point, rather oneway trade spot
only, between the two countries. Bangladesh gets the supply of stones from the
hills of Meghalaya through this point and at any given point in time, the border
crossing is jampacked with trucks carrying the construction material.
Nationals
of both the countries are allowed up to the border pillar.
The Dawki river bed through which the Indo-Bangladesh border runs presents a scene of festivity as onlookers from both sides throng the riverbed where they have a tentative borderline. There’s one big stone marked as the border post; Indians on one side and the Bangladeshis on the other. Two soldiers, one from each country, are posted there to control the crowds that like to mingle at the Dawki river bed. The Bangladeshi tourists outnumber Indians probably by 50:1.
There was
this Bangla beauty on the other side. When I pointed my camera, she posed and
smiled as I took a few photos of her. Beauties are always camera conscious.
Woooww these are great pictures
